Torrential Rains Devastate Dubai, Prompting Flight Diversions and School Closures

Heavy rainfall drenches Dubai, leading to widespread flooding

Airport operations affected, leaving travelers stranded

Dubai's role as a major international hub has been disrupted by torrential rains that have battered the United Arab Emirates, leaving 18 individuals dead and prompting authorities to divert scores of incoming flights. The unrelenting downpour has transformed roads into impassable rivers and submerged homes, leading to severe disruptions in the transportation and daily life of the emirate.

Over the past 24 hours ending at 8 am Tuesday, certain inland areas of the UAE received an astonishing 80mm (32 inches) of rainfall, a figure that nearly matches the average annual precipitation for the entire year. The sheer volume and intensity of the recent storms have caused widespread flash flooding, leaving motorists stranded and homes inundated.

Government measures and remote operations

Due to the worsening weather conditions, the Dubai Government has instructed all government departments and private schools to implement remote work arrangements on Tuesday, April 16. This directive aims to keep citizens and employees safe while ensuring essential services continue functioning.

Images and videos shared on social media depict the severity of the situation, with vehicles submerged and major highways resembling raging rivers. Authorities are urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise caution in flood-prone areas.
